ASUS ROG Ally X20 ships today with AMD Z2 Extreme and 7.4-inch OLED
AMD's Z2 Extreme and a 7.4-inch OLED in a translucent shell—ASUS's play against the Steam Deck OLED

ASUS Republic of Gamers dropped the ROG Ally X20 today, pairing AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with a 7.4-inch OLED panel ASUS calls the Nebula HDR Display. The handheld ships in a translucent black chassis with gold internal structure—a design callback to gaming hardware from two decades ago.
The Z2 Extreme is AMD's current handheld chip, built on Zen 5 architecture with RDNA 3.5 graphics. ASUS is positioning this as a step up from the original Ally's Z1 Extreme, though raw performance gains over the previous generation are modest—expect 10-15% CPU uplift and similar GPU performance with slightly better power efficiency. The OLED upgrade is the real headline: deeper blacks, better contrast, and lower response times than the original's LCD.
ASUS bundled software updates aimed at smoothing out Windows 11 on a handheld form factor. The original Ally launched with interface quirks that made navigating Steam and Xbox Game Pass clunky without a mouse. Whether those fixes actually land depends on how much ASUS overhauled the overlay, but early impressions suggest it's less janky than the first revision.
The X20 competes directly with Valve's Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo's Legion Go. The Z2 Extreme should outpace the Deck's custom APU in raw horsepower, but battery life and heat management under sustained loads remain open questions. The translucent design is a nice touch if you're into that aesthetic—otherwise it's a spec bump in a crowded field.
