Chinese tech companies order $35 billion worth of Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 GPUs
Workstation GPU orders could squeeze RTX 50-series gaming card supply

China's largest tech companies ordered roughly 3 million Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 workstation GPUs worth $35 billion, according to reports from Chinese media cited by Tom's Hardware. ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent placed the bulk of orders for the export-compliant cards to run AI workloads under current U.S. trade restrictions.
Nvidia can only fulfill about 10% of those orders. The RTX Pro 5500 ships with performance caps to comply with export controls — it's a workstation card, not a data center accelerator like the H100 or H200. The companies are trying to stockpile anything they can get before restrictions tighten further.
This matters for gaming GPU supply because Nvidia shares production capacity across product lines. If fab time shifts to workstation cards for these massive orders, RTX 50-series gaming GPU availability could tighten. The RTX 5090 already launched with constrained stock — another supply crunch would push mid-tier cards (5070, 5060) back or limit quantities at launch.
If you're planning a 2025 build around an RTX 50-series card, check current pricing and availability trends. Supply shocks hit the mid-range hardest.
