New explosion physics shift post-plant meta and lethality zones

Counter-Strike 2 bomb now explodes from the center, changes C4 meta

Valve shipped a Counter-Strike 2 update that rewires how the bomb explodes. The C4 now detonates from its planted center point, not from player positions scattered around the site. The change makes the blast more visually consistent but alters damage falloff and safe-distance calculations that competitive players memorized over two decades.

The old system dealt damage based on each player's distance from the bomb model. The new system radiates damage outward from a single center point, meaning corners and cover that used to save you might not anymore — or vice versa. Valve says the swap makes explosions "more spectacular," but early tests show some previously lethal ranges now let you survive with single-digit HP if you're behind the right pixel of cover.

This matters for post-plant positioning. CTs who played off-angle or tucked behind half-cover to bait the defuse now need to re-learn safe distances. Expect pros to lab new hold spots within the week. It's a subtle change that becomes huge once you're in a 1v1 with the timer ticking and you're guessing whether that box saves you or not.

If you're still dialing in your CS2 settings after this patch, run a fresh playbook at BetterFPS to make sure your config still holds stable frames during those clutch rounds.
