Community mod bypasses Nvidia's hardware lock for DLSS 5 on older RTX cards
Modders have ported DLSS 5 to RTX 40-series cards by patching out incompatible CUDA instructions, according to Tom's Hardware. Nvidia shipped DLSS 5 exclusive to RTX 50-series (Blackwell) GPUs, but the community mod rewrites the instruction set to work on Ada Lovelace architecture.
The patch trades some performance for compatibility — early reports show frame-time improvements over DLSS 3, but not the full gains Nvidia advertises for native DLSS 5 on Blackwell. Quality settings work; multi-frame generation features are hit-or-miss depending on the game. Stability varies. This is unofficial, unsupported code.
This is the usual cat-and-mouse. Nvidia locks features to sell new cards; modders crack them open. If you're on a 4090 and don't want to upgrade, this gives you a preview. If you're shopping, it doesn't change the math — native DLSS 5 on a 5080 will beat a modded 4080 every time.
