Community fix cuts DLSS 5's performance penalty in half by reordering the render pipeline

Modders found a way to slash DLSS 5 Neural Rendering's performance cost by changing when it runs in the pipeline. The fix, called Neural Upstream (built by matiasLombo), moves neural rendering ahead of upscaling instead of after it — the opposite of NVIDIA's official order. It's now baked into DLSS5-Autopilot, a community tool that injects Neural Rendering into games NVIDIA never officially supported.
One Redditor tested the mod on an RTX 4080 in Assassin's Creed Shadows at 4K with DLSS Performance mode. Frame rates jumped from the mid-50s (NVIDIA's stock pipeline) to the mid-90s (Neural Upstream). That's a near-doubling of performance for the same visual output.
The catch: Neural Upstream only works with DLSS5-Autopilot's injected implementation, not NVIDIA's native integration. It also doesn't support Ray Reconstruction yet. If you're running a game with official DLSS 5 support and want this boost, you'd need to swap to the modded pipeline — which means giving up any native optimizations NVIDIA baked in.
This is a real solution to a real problem. DLSS 5 Neural Rendering shipped with a steep cost (sometimes 20-30 FPS on RTX 40-series cards), and NVIDIA hasn't addressed it in drivers. The mod proves the performance hit wasn't inevitable — just a question of pipeline design.
