Game Pass stuck at 30 million subs — Microsoft missed its 77 million target

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told press that Game Pass subscriber growth has "not met our internal expectations," according to IGN. Microsoft projected 77 million subscribers by mid-2026. The service sits at roughly 30 million — less than half the goal.

The miss matters for PC gamers banking on day-one releases through the service. Microsoft hasn't said whether the slowdown will change which games land on Game Pass at launch or how aggressively it discounts the Ultimate tier. The company still backs the strategy publicly, but the gap between target and reality is wide enough that adjustments seem likely.

This is a problem for anyone treating Game Pass as their primary game library. If growth stays flat and Microsoft pulls back on flagship day-one drops to protect sales, the value proposition shifts. The service is still solid for trying games you wouldn't buy outright, but the "Netflix of gaming" pitch looks shakier when the catalog shrinks or release windows slip.

If you're weighing whether to keep your sub or buy games outright, check which titles actually benefit from higher settings — some Game Pass releases ship with locked presets that waste your hardware anyway.
