Always-online authentication blocks a $70 single-player campaign on day one

Halo: Campaign Evolved hits 'mixed' on Steam after server login blocks single-player

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched into early access yesterday and immediately ran into server authentication problems that prevented players from starting the campaign — a single-player mode that shouldn't need an internet connection at all. Steam reviews sit at "mixed" as of this morning, with most negative reviews citing the always-online requirement and login failures.

343 Industries charged $70 for early access to the reboot, which doesn't include multiplayer at launch. Players who bought in are stuck at a login screen when the authentication servers hiccup, which happened repeatedly in the first 24 hours. The game does have a planned offline mode, but it's not enabled yet. No ETA on when it will be.

This is the exact problem that tanked SimCity 2013 and Diablo III at launch — forcing online checks for content that doesn't need them, then watching the servers buckle under day-one load. It's 2026. We know how this ends. If your campaign is single-player and your servers can't handle launch day, let people play offline from hour zero.

If you're troubleshooting other FPS performance issues while waiting for 343 to fix authentication, run a fresh optimization playbook to make sure your rig is dialed in when the servers stabilize.
