id Software cut to half its size in Xbox layoffs, studio says it's back to Doom 2016 headcount

id Software confirmed it's been cut to roughly half its previous headcount in a new round of Xbox layoffs, according to IGN. The studio put out a statement saying it's "back to the size it was when it made 2016's Doom."

Doom 2016 shipped with a team of around 100-120 people. That means id is down from somewhere in the 200-250 range before the cuts. The statement didn't say which roles were eliminated or whether any current projects are affected.

This is the latest in a string of layoffs across Xbox studios. Microsoft has shed thousands of jobs across gaming divisions since acquiring Activision Blizzard in 2023. id Software's cuts hit harder because the studio's output directly affects what PC gamers have to benchmark on — Doom Eternal is still one of the best-optimized shooters you can run at high refresh rates, and id Tech powers multiple franchises.

No word yet on what this means for the next Doom or Quake project. If you're still running benchmarks on Eternal, check your settings against the current meta.
