Linux kernel patches claim 31% boost to 1% lows on AMD CPUs

Developer David Vernet posted a set of AMD P-State driver patches to the Linux kernel mailing list that claim to improve 1% lows by as much as 31% on AMD CPUs running SteamOS and other Linux distributions, according to TechPowerUp. The patches introduce an "epp_boost" feature that tweaks CPU scaling and boost behavior by identifying busy cores and adjusting EPP (Energy Performance Preference) settings on the fly.

The improvement targets frame-time consistency — the metric that dictates whether a game feels smooth or stuttery, even if average FPS stays high. A 31% jump in 1% lows means fewer dropped frames and less micro-stutter during heavy scenes. Vernet's testing focused on AMD hardware, so this applies most directly to Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and desktop Ryzen rigs running Linux.

These patches aren't merged yet. They're on the mailing list for review, which means you won't see the gains until they land in a kernel update, then filter down to SteamOS stable builds. If you're on a Steam Deck and willing to switch to the beta or dev channel, the timeline shortens — Valve tends to pull in performance fixes quickly.
