Microsoft fixing Windows Update GPU driver downgrades with new ID system
Windows Update won't silently roll back your GPU drivers anymore
Microsoft confirmed it's patching the Windows Update bug that forces newer GPU drivers back to older versions. The company posted details in a Windows Insider blog: the new system tags drivers with multiple IDs so Windows stops treating fresh installs as outdated.
The bug hit users who manually installed the latest Nvidia or AMD drivers, then watched Windows Update silently revert them days later. Performance drops. Crashes. Missing features. The rollback happened because Windows Update compared version numbers wrong and flagged newer drivers as "non-compliant."
Microsoft's fix adds a secondary identifier that Windows Update checks before downgrading. The patch ships to Insider builds first, then rolls to stable Windows 11 in a future update. No exact date yet.
This matters if you run fresh drivers for day-one game support or DLSS updates. Manual driver installs shouldn't get clobbered by an OS that thinks it knows better. The fix is overdue.
