Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $12.93 billion

Nvidia closed a $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, the GitHub-like platform hosting thousands of open-source AI models, according to Tom's Hardware. The deal puts Nvidia in control of the dominant distribution hub for text, image, and multimodal models used by researchers and indie developers.

Hugging Face hosts over 600,000 models and is the de facto home for open weights alternatives to proprietary systems. Nvidia already contributed heavily to the platform — CUDA optimizations, Tensor RT integrations, reference implementations for its GPUs — but owning it outright changes the leverage equation. Competitors like AMD and Intel relied on Hugging Face as neutral ground for their own model showcases and framework support.

This matters for gaming hardware because inference workloads are bleeding into consumer GPUs. DLSS uses tensor cores for frame generation. Modders ship AI upscalers and NPC dialogue systems that pull from Hugging Face repos.
