NVIDIA DLSS 5 update doubles performance, cuts VRAM use by 20%

Free performance without a game patch — 20% VRAM headroom sweetens 4K on 16GB cards

NVIDIA DLSS 5 update doubles performance, cuts VRAM use by 20%

NVIDIA is rolling out a DLSS 5 update on October 16 that doubles performance in games already optimized for DLSS 5, according to TechPowerUp. The patch also cuts VRAM consumption by 20% at 4K with DLSS enabled — room for more texture data without the upscaler hogging capacity.

DLSS 5 shipped with the RTX 50-series Blackwell cards earlier this year, adding multi-frame generation on top of DLSS 4's single-frame approach. This update refines the neural rendering pipeline without requiring game-side patches. If you're running a 5080 or 5090 at 4K and hitting VRAM ceilings (32GB on the 5090, 16GB on the 5080), the 20% headroom matters — texture pop-in and stutter drop when the card isn't starved.

The 2x claim is a big jump. NVIDIA trains DLSS models continuously and ships updates through Game Ready drivers, so existing DLSS 5 titles get faster without waiting on developers. The catch: this only applies to games with DLSS 5 support, not DLSS 3 or older builds. If you're still on a 40-series card, you're capped at DLSS 3.

This is the kind of update that shifts buying advice. The 5080's 16GB looked tight for 4K earlier this year; reclaiming 20% of that overhead makes it a cleaner recommendation. The 5090's 32GB was already comfortable — now it's overkill for most users.

Check which settings hit hardest on your rig and see if DLSS 5 Quality or Balanced mode keeps you above your refresh target with the new driver.
