AI compression could let 8GB cards handle textures meant for 16GB setups

NVIDIA's RTX Neural Texture Compression is now running on Windows-on-Arm, prepping for release on the RTX Spark platform. According to TechPowerUp, the AI-driven compression tech can cut VRAM usage by up to 7x — dropping a 6.5GB scene down to 970MB in NVIDIA's GTC 2026 demo.
NTC uses AI to compress textures on the fly without tanking quality. Games pull high-res materials without the memory hit, which matters if you're running an 8GB card that chokes on modern AAA titles. The tech debuted at GTC in May; this is the first confirmation it's shipping on actual hardware.
This could be huge for mid-tier GPUs stuck with 8-12GB VRAM. If it works as shown, you get near-high-res textures without the stutter and pop-in that plague cards at their VRAM ceiling. RTX Spark is NVIDIA's Windows-on-Arm play, so desktop gamers will have to wait for broader driver support.
