RPCS3 devs call DLSS 5 'AI-slop generator', say upscaling hides bad optimization

The RPCS3 emulator development team called out NVIDIA's DLSS 5 as an "AI-slop generator" in a September 3rd post, according to Tom's Hardware. Their complaint: the industry is leaning on upscaling and frame generation to mask poor optimization instead of shipping games that run well natively.

The devs argue upscalers "hallucinate" frames rather than rendering them, which can introduce artifacts and input lag — problems that matter more in emulation, where precision timing is everything. DLSS 5 debuted on Blackwell GPUs (RTX 5090, 5080) with multi-frame generation, pushing further into AI-generated frames rather than brute-force rendering. The RPCS3 team sees that as the wrong direction.

This isn't a new argument. Frame generation has always traded some visual fidelity and input responsiveness for higher frame counts, and emulators — which simulate entire hardware stacks — are especially sensitive to those tradeoffs. But the RPCS3 post hits harder because it names the problem a lot of people feel: games shipping with "DLSS required" performance profiles instead of running clean at native resolution on mid-range hardware.
