Dell's RTX 5090 Alienware prebuilt costs less than the GPU alone
Prebuilt cheaper than the card inside — rare for a 5090, but you're stuck with Dell parts
Dell cut $1,550 off its Alienware Area-51 desktop with an RTX 5090, bringing the price to $3,479. That's $20 less than NVIDIA's $3,499 MSRP for the 5090 alone, according to Tom's Hardware.
The system includes a Core Ultra 9 285K, 32GB DDR5-6000, 2TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe, and liquid cooling. The catch: Dell uses a proprietary motherboard and PSU, so future GPU swaps mean replacing the whole power supply — and good luck finding a compatible one outside Dell's parts channel.
This is a short-term pricing anomaly. NVIDIA's 5090 stock has been tight since launch, so standalone cards usually sell above MSRP when they're in stock at all. If you wanted a 5090 build anyway and you're okay locking into Dell's ecosystem, the math works. If you care about upgrade paths, build your own or wait for the 5080 Super to drop.
