Modder's quad 8-pin adapter aims to fix RTX 5090 meltdown risk
A warranty-voiding workaround for the RTX 5090's melting 16-pin connector

A modder has released a custom quad 8-pin power adapter for the RTX 5090, claiming it prevents the 16-pin connector meltdowns that have plagued NVIDIA's flagship since launch. The adapter—spotted by Tom's Hardware—routes power through four legacy 8-pin PCIe cables instead of the single 12V-2x6 connector NVIDIA ships with the card.
The mod addresses a real problem. The RTX 5090 pulls 575W stock, and reports of melted 16-pin connectors have surfaced across owner forums since February. NVIDIA blames improper cable seating; users blame connector design. Either way, melting an $8,500 card (or $2,000 MSRP if you could actually find one at that price) is a disaster when replacements don't exist.
The catch: this voids your warranty immediately. You're also pulling 575W through four separate cables, which requires a PSU with enough 8-pin rails and enough case clearance to route them. If your PSU already has a native 12V-2x6 cable that seats properly, this mod solves nothing. If you've already had a close call or your case makes a clean 16-pin bend impossible, it's a $60–$80 insurance policy.
If you're running a 5090, check your settings to make sure you're actually using the frames you're paying for—melted connectors or not.
