Chinese factories are stripping RTX 5090s for AI server parts

Why you can't find a 5090: they're being stripped for AI chips

Chinese factories are stripping RTX 5090s for AI server parts

A leaked video shows Chinese factories dismantling RTX 5090s en masse — pulling Blackwell GB202 dies off consumer cards and transplanting them onto custom AI server boards. The operation targets both Founders Edition and AIB partner cards, according to Tom's Hardware.

The practice exploits a loophole: US export restrictions block shipment of high-end AI accelerators to China, but consumer GeForce cards slip through. Once landed, the dies get harvested and repurposed for server racks. The 5090's 32GB of GDDR7 and raw compute (21,760 CUDA cores) make it valuable enough to justify the labor cost of disassembly and rework.

This is why 5090 street prices sit 20-30% above MSRP in most regions — demand isn't purely from gamers. If you're trying to buy one for 4K gaming, you're competing with bulk orders headed to gray-market refurbishers.

If you're shopping 5090-class performance but can't stomach the markup, check BetterFPS's GPU hierarchy to see where the 5080 or 4090 land for your resolution target. A 4090 still hits 4K/144+ in most titles with DLSS 3.
