A Ryzen 9 9950X3D died an hour after being moved from an ASRock X670E Taichi Carrara to an ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero, according to a Reddit user posting in r/GamersNexus. The chip had been running fine for about a year and a half before the swap.

The user (SpecialistConcept423) applied no manual overclocks or voltage tweaks — just enabled one of the board's built-in memory presets for SK hynix 6200 MHz RAM, saved, and rebooted. The board threw a "00" Q-Code (CPU initialization failure) and refused to post. Pulling the CPU revealed visible damage.

This is the second high-profile 9950X3D death tied to an ASUS board in recent months. ASUS hasn't commented on the earlier case or this one. ASRock boards, by contrast, haven't been linked to similar failures — the chip ran stable on ASRock for 18 months before the move.

If you're running a 9950X3D on an ASUS X670E board, be careful with built-in memory presets. They're supposed to be safe — the fact that they're not is the problem. AMD's official guidance is DDR5-5200 for Zen 5; anything beyond that is technically an overclock, even if the board calls it a "preset."

If you're building or upgrading, check your rig's compatibility before you flip the switch. Better to catch a bad preset in software than lose a $700 CPU an hour after install.
