Valve's Steam Machine ships with single-channel RAM, tanks performance
Cost-cutting RAM config leaves frames on the table

Valve's new Steam Machine launched with single-channel DDR5 instead of dual-channel, a cost-cutting move that's eating into frame rates. Reviews pegged the console somewhere between an RX 6600 and RX 7600 in testing, but Gamers Nexus found the GPU wasn't the problem — the RAM setup was.
Single-channel memory cuts bandwidth in half. For an APU or integrated graphics setup, that's catastrophic. Even discrete GPUs take a hit when the CPU can't feed them fast enough. The Steam Machine has limited VRAM to begin with, so starving the system side makes it worse.
This is a false economy. Dual-channel kits cost maybe $10–15 more at volume. Valve saved pennies and lost double-digit percentage points in 1% lows. If you're buying one, budget for a second stick immediately.
If you're spec'ing a build and tempted to save $20 on RAM, don't. Check our optimization guides for memory config that actually works.
