16GB VRAM GPUs now outnumber 8GB cards on Steam for the first time

Steam's July 2026 Hardware Survey marks a turning point: GPUs with 16GB of VRAM now represent a larger share of the install base than 8GB cards, per TweakTown's analysis of the latest data. This is the first time the 16GB bracket has pulled ahead since Valve started breaking out VRAM capacity in the survey.

The shift is mostly RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT cards filtering into the midrange, where 8GB used to dominate. The RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and RX 7600 still hold volume, but new builds are skipping them. 12GB sits in third place — still common but no longer the default step-up tier it was in the RTX 30-series era.

This tracks with what we've been saying for a year: 8GB is a hard limit for modern AAA at 1440p, and buyers know it. Texture streaming stutter in Black Ops 6, Fortnite with Unreal 5.5, and Warzone at higher settings all punish 8GB cards visibly. The used market for 8GB GPUs has softened accordingly. 16GB is the new baseline if you're shopping above $400.
