Valve's Steam Machine stuck at $1,000+ as memory shortage worsens

Valve told GamesRadar+ that the memory crisis hitting DDR5 and GDDR7 production is "still getting worse," which means the Steam Machine's $1,000+ sticker price isn't coming down anytime soon. The company cited ongoing supply shortages for both system RAM and GPU memory as the bottleneck keeping costs high.

The Steam Machine — Valve's attempt at a modular, upgradeable console-PC hybrid — launched earlier this year with a spec sheet that includes 32GB DDR5 and a GPU packing 16GB GDDR7. Both components are currently supply-constrained. GDDR7 production is still ramping on NVIDIA's RTX 50-series and AMD's RX 9000 lineup, and DDR5 fab capacity hasn't caught up to demand after the post-pandemic buildout delays.

This is bad timing for anyone hoping the Steam Machine would slot in under the $800 sweet spot that made the Steam Deck a hit. Valve's betting that modular upgradeability justifies the premium, but if memory prices stay elevated through 2027, the value pitch gets harder to defend against a $700 PlayStation 6 or a DIY AM5 build.
