Xbox cuts 268 jobs in studio reshuffle, merges Turn 10 and Playground

Microsoft announced 268 layoffs across Xbox first-party studios today, paired with a sweeping reorganization that moves several major franchises under new management. Halo Studios, Rare, and World's Edge are shifting to Activision oversight, while Obsidian Entertainment moves to Bethesda Softworks. Turn 10 Studios (Forza Motorsport) and Playground Games (Forza Horizon) are merging into a single studio.

The cuts hit Halo Studios and other first-party teams. Microsoft framed the moves as part of a broader "operational alignment" following the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Obsidian's shift to Bethesda puts The Outer Worlds and Avowed under the same roof as Fallout and Elder Scrolls. The Turn 10/Playground merger consolidates the entire Forza franchise under one leadership structure, which could streamline development cycles for future entries.

This matters for PC gamers because it directly affects the pipeline for Halo Infinite updates, Forza releases, and Obsidian's next RPGs. Halo moving to Activision management is the biggest wild card — Activision runs Call of Duty's live-service machine, which could mean faster content drops or a bigger push toward monetization. The Forza merger might accelerate releases or blur the lines between Motorsport's sim focus and Horizon's arcade handling. Obsidian under Bethesda could mean tighter integration with id Tech or Creation Engine tools, but also the risk of Bethesda's launch quality standards rubbing off.
