Xbox moves Halo franchise to Activision after gutting 343 Industries

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is moving the Halo franchise to Activision after cutting most of 343 Industries' staff, according to a Polygon video discussion with editor Oli Welsh. The decision ends 343's 15-year run as Halo's steward since taking over from Bungie in 2011.

Activision will handle future Halo development, though no timeline or studio assignment has been announced. 343 Industries remains in some form, but its role in the franchise appears finished. This comes after years of rocky launches — Halo Infinite shipped in 2021 without core modes and never recovered its player base, while the Master Chief Collection took years to fix.

For PC players, this could mean tighter optimization and better launch-day performance. Activision ships Call of Duty annually with mostly stable PC ports and immediate driver support from NVIDIA and AMD. But it also means Halo might adopt aggressive battle pass systems and year-round content cycles that favor engagement over long-term balance. The franchise has been stuck in neutral since Infinite's disappointing performance.
